Food Wastage: The world’s dumbest problem

When we are told to think about the stuff that’s hurting our planet, what things come to our mind first? Things like smokestacks, cars, oil spills, deforestation. But one thing that skips our mind, is all the food we throw away. In India, food wastage generated is 50 Kg per capita per year which equals 68,760,163 tonnes per year ( Acc. to Food waste Index Report 2021, from UNEP ).

All of this wasted food is a huge contributor to climate change. If global food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, just behind China and United States. So one can come to the conclusion that it is an enormous problem. However, it is one of the easiest ways to address climate change.

It takes a ton of resources to produce food. On top of that, it takes a lot of effort to store and transport it and when food decomposes, it isn’t just stinky but it releases a lot of methane {a greenhouse gas }. We’re trashing our planet to grow food that no one eats. Actually, no one likes wasting food, it’s just something that we haven’t been paying much attention to. Of all of the challenging problems out there, reducing the amount of food is one of the easiest.

Well, to understand the reasons behind the food waste, we need not be an expert, one of the reasons is that we don’t really think while buying, we never question ourselves that ” Do I really need that?” and another part of the reason is that we overbuy as we have tons of space to store it in. By the way, we love and are comfortable in empty spaces in our houses but we are uncomfortable when we see our refrigerators empty. And the last reason, which is quite relatable is that when we have a big plate we tend to put more food, whether or not we can eat it all.

So it turns out that the ways to prevent food wastage are simple and small, like, changing the size of the plate according to our limit of having food and changing our behavior and attitude while buying food, can have a profound impact on nature. And it doesn’t take much effort, because the effects are so less on us.

None of us is perfect. Wasting less food isn’t going to happen overnight but we can always try. And if we do have extra food, then let’s at least try to get it to people who could use it. I would like to end my last post of the year 2021 with a small request to all the readers that let’s be more careful about our actions as the aftermath is super dangerous for mother earth and for us also. Our small steps can help prevent the current climate situation getting worsen.

  1. Nice article Ishmeet, once again ! An insight into food waste issue. Thankfully there are a few NGOs now who collect extra food from events and give it to the needy. But a lot can still be done. Thanks for bringing this to light. Keep writing.
